The Convener of Widows Support Programme, Rev. Cecelia Onitiri, has called for help for widows, especially younger ones.
Speaking at the fourth edition of the programme in Lagos, she noted that many widows are abandoned to their fates, stressing that paucity of funds has limited her contribution to them.
Onitiri, a Senior Pastor at His Heavenly Light Ministry, Lekki, however, expressed gladness that she had increased the number of benefiting widows from 50 to 100.
She revealed that the Ministry also provided medical support for the widows, adding that she is grateful to Kleinberg Medical Centre, Victoria Island, led by its Medical Director, Dr. Akeem Anifowose, for the support given to the programme.
She said: “ I am concerned about the very young widows, with babies and children. I wonder what could have taken away their husbands at their prime? Society has to do something. There is the need to find out why young men are dying, leaving their young wives and children to face the hardships of life alone, without any companions or help. It is very sad.
“This year, we had a team of four doctors, four nurses, a pharmacist and of course, Dr. Akeem, who examined the widows and administered drugs.
“The medical team enlightened the widows on how to manage High Blood Pressure (BP) and diabetes.
“They were informed on the right diets, importance of exercise and how to maintain a healthy living.”
One of the guest ministers, Abiola Olaide Adewale, a retired banker, also a widow, spoke on ‘God’s Special Care For Widows’.
