Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, has pardoned 115 inmates identified by the sub-inaugural Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy in the state.
According to him, the action was in line with the powers conferred on him by section 212 of the 1999 Constitution.
Presenting the report in Damaturu, the former Attorney General, who doubles as the Senior Special Assistant on Legal Matters, Sale Samanja, said: “All the freed inmates are happy with the governor’s benevolence. They have pledged to correct their past mistakes.”
While receiving the report, Buni said it was the state’s way of decongesting the Correctional Service (CoS) centres across the state.
According to him, the freed inmates have learnt their lessons and would avoid repeating what put them into jail.
He said: “This will facilitate inmates’ rehabilitation. The wealthy individuals are to assist the inmates in offsetting their minor fines while in jails.
