Men of the Benue State Police Command have arrested 43-year-old Dantata Bawa for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl in the North Bank area, a suburb of Makurdi in the state capital.
The incident, according to an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity, happened on Monday when the suspect allegedly lured the girl into his room.
The mother of the girl was said to be away at the time the suspect lured the little girl to his room
“The suspect engages in menial jobs within the area but yesterday (Monday) when a little girl of about four years old was playing in the neighbourhood, the man lured her into his room,” the eyewitness said.
It was gathered that some neighbours who heard the girl’s cry forcefully opened the door and called the policemen who arrested the suspect.
“The suspect is currently held at the police headquarters in Makurdi,” the eyewitness said.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the Coordinator of Benue Coalition of Human Rights Protection, Jimmie Adzenda, said the group was following the case and would ensure that the culprit is punished to serve as a deterrent.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident and said the suspect would soon be charged in court.
