A 56-year-old man, identified simply as Mr Ọkpara has been arrested for allegedly defiling his 11-year-old daughter in Anambra State.
Okpara, a native of Adazi-Enu in Anaocha Local Government Area of the state, was said to have committed the act at his residence in Fegge, Onitsha.
This is according to a press release by Chidimma Ikeanyiowu, the Media Aide to the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, on Thursday.
Ikeanyiowu said the suspect was apprehended when neighbours noticed that the young girl was limping.
She added that the commissioner, while reacting to the development, deployed security personnel to the scene of the incident and promised to get to the bottom of the case assuring that justice must prevail.
She said, “Upon interrogations, the girl revealed that her father usually do have carnal knowledge of her every night and threatened to kill her if she ever tells anyone hence the reason why she has not raised the alarm.
“According to the victim, the suspect who is her father started taking advantage of her after her mother’s death in 2020 and became overly protective of her by not allowing other family members, friends and relatives to come close.
“Although when interrogated, the suspect denied the allegation stating in his defense that his daughter’s inability to work properly was because she fell from the refrigerator.”
Meanwhile, the suspect has been arraigned before the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka on Wednesday.
