Security has been beefed up in Damaturu, Yobe State capital, ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the state today. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there has been heavy presence of police personnel and those of other security agencies at strategic locations in the capital city.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, told NAN that operatives were fully equipped and ready to ensure adequate peace and security in Damaturu before, during and after the visit.
He said the President would inaugurate the newly-built police command headquarters, police modern hospital and police secondary school in Damaturu. Other projects Buhari is expected to inaugurate include Damaturu Cargo Airport, Model School at New Bra Bra Quarters, new Maternal and Child Healthcare Complex and Damaturu Modern Market.
The Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Barma Shettima, told NAN that the market has state-of-the-art facilities. He said other modern markets in Nguru and Gashua were also completed, while that of Potiskum had reached 65 per cent completion level.
Some residents of Damaturu, who spoke with NAN, expressed excitement at the President’s visit. In the same vein, the state government has said its arrangements to host the President have been perfected.
The Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Mohammed Lamin, made this known in a statement, at the weekend, in Damaturu.
“We are fully prepared to receive our President on a one-day working visit to our dear state,” he said. He added that the president was expected to commission various projects executed by Governor Mai Mala Buni in the security, health, education and transport sectors.
Lamin called on members of the public to come out en masse to give the President a rousing welcome. He also enjoined the residents to conduct themselves in an orderly manner and give the security agencies maximum support and cooperation.
“Today is a new chapter in the history of our state, as we are fully prepared to receive our President on his one-day working visit to our dear state. We’re all witnesses of the present administration of Governor Buni,” he said, adding that the governor had redeemed most of his campaign promises in improving the living conditions of the people in the 178 wards in the state”.
“The governor has completed most of the capital projects that will be inaugurated by the President in the four critical socio-economic sectors. He has already redeemed most of its campaign promises on the completed projects in 17 local councils, including the ones in the state capital, Damaturu.”Besides, he noted that the governor has also raised the socio-economic status of the electorate that voted him into office on May 29, 2019.
