There was tension in Kano, yesterday, at the Kurna area over the alleged killing of a teenager by a police inspector.
The incident came amid another mass demonstration by members of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) against the judgment of the Appeal Court on the state governorship election.
It was gathered that the crisis occurred in the early hours on Wednesday, when some political thugs clashed, and disrupted the peaceful location.
Eyewitnesses told The Guardian that a team of police personnel deployed to the area embarked on sporadic shooting and released teargas canisters to disperse the thugs.
However, police intervention turned sour when a stray bullet hit a teenager who was not part of the warring thugs, a development that provoked the mass protest.
The protesters barricaded the busy Kano-Katsina-Daura highway for several hours and caused hardship for commuters and motorists.
MEANWHILE, Kano state Police command has confirmed the killing of the victim, which it claimed happened during a clash between two rival groups where a police inspector name not revealed, opened fire.
A statement by Police spokesman, SP Abdullahai Kiyawa, said the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Gumel has subsequently ordered the arrest of the culprit, a police inspector.
Gumel said: “The Police Inspector has since been arrested and is now in police custody. This action of the Police Inspector is quite regrettable. The command is calling on members of the public to be rest assured that justice will be served.”
