A newly accredited private university, Miva Open University, says it has secured the accreditation of the National Universities Commission for four new courses.
The institution disclosed this in a statement on Monday.
According to the statement, the accredited courses are B.Sc Criminology & Security Studies; B.Sc Entrepreneurship; B.Sc Information Technology; and B.Sc Mass Communication.
The four new programmes are under the School of Management and Social Sciences, School of Computing, and School of Communication and Media Studies respectively.
According to the statement, officials of the university, led by its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tayo Arulogun, received the NUC accreditation team on March 8, 2024.
In his opening remarks, the vice chancellor highlighted the university’s vision, mission, purpose and core values, noting that “MIVA Open University is an innovative and digital university with a focus on a blended learning model.”
He further informed the NUC representatives that the university was NUC-CCMAS-compliant in all programmes, embraces innovative curricula, and focuses on innovation, science, technology, health, management and governance.
In response, the NUC lead, Mr Tukur Ladan, shared the expectations of NUC and reiterated that the commission visited to verify the adequacy of physical facilities and human resources made available for the proposed four new programmes.
“The physical facilities inspected include the hardware, logic and software laboratories, three mass communication studios, learner’s support services unit, IT facilities, e-library/e-resources, physical library, guidance and counselling unit, four lecture halls with overhead projectors, offices of university functionaries, including those of the Director of Academic Planning; Dean, School of Management and Social Sciences; Dean, School of Computing; Dean, School of Communication & Media Studies, and those of the HoDs of the four new bachelor’s degree programmes.
“During the exit meeting, the NUC programme team leaders acknowledged that MIVA Open University’s teaching and virtual learning model is unique, and worthy to be emulated by other universities. The Team leaders expressed satisfaction with the university for working together with NUC to ensure a successful exercise.”
