The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State Branch has called on the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to urgently implement the payment of the Reviewed Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) for the benefit of medical and dental doctors employed in the state.
Also, the Lagos NMA Chairman urged the Federal Government to reassess and reformulate its economic policies to alleviate the severe hardships faced by the citizens.
The Chairman, NMA, Lagos State Branch, Dr. Babajide Kehinde Saheed who made the call in Lagos on Monday, also said the immediate implementation of the Reviewed CONMESS for NMA members employed by the Lagos State Government is essential in ensuring equitable remuneration as well as bridging the existing salary gap between medical and dental professionals employed in the federal health institutions and those working in state health facilities.
Similarly, he noted that the payment of the reviewed CONMESS will curb the brain drain of medical doctors, the shortage of which has reached a critical point, exacerbating workload and leading to extreme burnout among medical doctors in the state.
Saheed spoke at a press conference to announce the NMA, Lagos State Branch’s 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM/Scientific Conference) scheduled to run from July 28 to August 3rd.
This year’s theme ‘Healthcare Delivery in Nigeria Amidst Multifaceted Challenges’ and sub-theme ‘Management of Traumatic Brachial Plexus Injuries’ are pivotal in addressing the pressing issues that plague our healthcare system’.
According to Dr. Saheed, “The non-payment of the Reviewed CONMESS to Lagos State employed doctors represents a significant oversight that must be rectified immediately. “We implore the Lagos State Government to initiate the payment of the Reviewed CONMESS without further delay,” he added.
Additionally, Saheed called for the prompt commencement of arrangements for implementing the new minimum wage for Lagos NMA members, to prevent further disparities when the new salary structure is adopted.
Furthermore, the Lagos NMA urged the Lagos State Government to immortalise Dr Vwaere Diaso by naming doctors’ quarters at the General Hospital as the ‘Dr. Vwaere Diaso Doctors Quarter’.
Dr. Vwaere lost her life due to a faulty electronic lift system at the doctors’ quarters in General Hospital, Lagos, on August 1st, 2023. “Today, we also solemnly commemorate the one-year anniversary of the tragic passing of Dr. Vwaere,” said Saheed.
During the widely publicised protest, the NMA Chairman urged the Federal Government to reassess and reformulate its economic policies to alleviate the severe hardships faced by the citizens.
He said a re-gig of the economic policies of the country will prevent potential nationwide unrest and improve the quality of life for all Nigerians
