It will be a make-or-mar situation for the Super Falcons of Nigeria as they face off against Japan in the final group match at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games today.
After consecutive 1-0 losses to Brazil and Spain, the team must defeat Japan to advance to the quarterfinals. Japan have a rich history in the Games having won the silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics.
They have also achieved success on the global football stage, winning the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup and earning a silver medal in the 2015 edition.
Both Japan and Nigeria lost their opening Group C games, but the Asians secured three points in their second game against Brazil, while Nigeria lost to Spain. This leaves their final group game crucial for both teams’ qualification.
Japan only needs a draw to qualify, while the Super Falcons must win by at least two goals to progress as one of the best losers. The Super Falcons have faced Japan three times.
In their first encounter at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, Nigeria secured a 1-0 victory, with a goal by Vera Okolo. In other meetings during international friendlies, Japan won both games with a 2-0 scoreline.
Meanwhile, Falcons striker, Asisat Oshoala, has urged the team to give their all in the game against Japan. The Bay FC forward of the US said ahead of the game:
“We just have to go all out against Japan. We have to go all out and give everything and make the best out of it because we still have the opportunity to qualify. Hope is not lost.”
