The Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, on Friday, remanded a 36-year-old Yetunde Alao for stealing $5,006 Canadian dollars, approximately N5.2 million in Nigeria.
The defendant whose address is withheld is on two court counts of conspiracy and theft.
Benedict Aigbokhan, the Police Prosecutor, told the court that the defendant and others who are still at large carried out the alleged offences on June 2 at Akeem Balogun Street, Idimu, Lagos.
He said that five jackets valued at N500,000, an international passport belonging to one Mr. Anthony Alao, and $5,006 in Canadian dollars—roughly N5.2 million were recovered from the defendant.
He further informed the court that the offences were against Lagos State’s 2015 Criminal Law, specifically Sections 287 and 411.
On the other hand, the accused entered a not-guilty plea to the charges.
His bail was set at N500,000 with two sureties each in an amount equal to that granted by Magistrate K. A. Ariyo.
One of the bail requirements set by the magistrate was that the sureties provide proof that they had paid taxes to the Lagos State Government.
She however ruled that the case be adjourned till July 2, for a hearing.
